Medical & Surgical Services

As a premier academic medical center, Hurley provides acute and tertiary care to a five-county region. Our nurses, working as part of a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals, consistently provide the highest level of patient- and family-centered care to our medical and surgical patients. Our five medical/surgical units are all remote telemetry capable:

5E Surgical Unit
A 23-bed surgical unit. Hurley’s surgical services include specialty teams for orthopedic, trauma, vascular, and bariatric surgery. Virtual (remote) telemetry is also available for stable patients requiring cardiac monitoring.

5C Medical/Surgical Unit
A 13-bed inpatient unit providing 11 private rooms and 1 semi-private room for patients who have an acute medical condition or are being treated for a surgical condition. Hurley’s Med-Surg nurses have been certified by ANCC (American Nurses Credentialing Center). Virtual (remote) telemetry is also available for stable patients requiring cardiac monitoring. Patients typically get admitted to the med-surg unit if their condition does not require a higher level of care or if they are pre- or post-surgery. Once admitted to the med-surg unit, a surgeon will see them and determine whether they need surgery. If they have surgery, they will return to the med-surg unit afterwards for follow up, and will be discharged when ready.

7E Medical Unit
A 37-bed nursing unit with 13 overflow beds, caring for a diverse population of adult patients with acute and chronic illnesses. Employing a team approach to nursing care, nurses work closely with the teaching service residents to provide patient care. We are the area’s only NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for the Health-system Elders) program for our geriatric patient population. Virtual (remote) telemetry is also available for stable patients requiring cardiac monitoring.

9E Medical/Surgical Oncology Unit
This 42-bed unit provides compassionate patient and family-centered care to oncology patients and their families. Taking a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, all RNs must attend a chemotherapy administration class within one year of employment. Virtual (remote) telemetry is also available for stable patients requiring cardiac monitoring.

6E Rehabilitation Unit/Center for Joint Replacement
This unit is dedicated to promoting functional recovery for patients due to trauma, brain injury, stroke, or other debilitating illness. It is also the region’s designated Pediatric Rehabilitation Unit. The Center for Joint Replacement provides the highest quality surgical and therapeutic care in the treatment and rehabilitation of joints. In 2010, it was awarded the Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
