Emergency Department

The Emergency Department at Hurley Medical Center provides 24-hour access to emergency medical care, 365 days a year. Our emergency physicians, physician assistants, nurses, emergency room technicians, medical social workers, transporters and administrative staff work together as a team, treating approximately 86,000 patients annually from throughout Genesee County and the state of Michigan.

Hurley’s Emergency Department is equipped with the latest, most advanced medical technology, including full radiology equipment (including x-ray, bedside ultrasound, 64-slice CT-scan and MRI), in order to quickly diagnose patient conditions and minimize the need to transfer patients to other areas of the hospital. It also has a Critical Decision Unit (CDU) where we can provide short-term observation and/or other additional care to patients who may not require a full inpatient admission to Hurley Medical Center.

The Pediatric Emergency area at Hurley Medical Center is the region’s only dedicated pediatric emergency unit of its kind. Located in a separate wing of the Emergency Department, our Pediatric Emergency area provides 24-hour, child-focused emergency treatment for patients ranging in age from newborns to 20 years old.

Hurley Medical Center is home to the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center, admitting over 1,700 patients annually, making it one of the highest-volume trauma centers in the state. Combining the latest technology with our highly-specialized team of physicians and staff, Hurley’s Level 1 Trauma Center provides the highest level of acute-care rapid response to adults and children who have been critically injured.

In early 2012, Hurley Medical Center will unveil the Paul F. Reinhart Emergency Trauma Center which will provide the highest level of specialized care to the sick and injured, further enhancing Hurley’s status as a premier public teaching hospital delivering world class patient care and safety.  As with our present Emergency Department, it will have 24-hour access to our outstanding team of in-house physicians and surgeons. And combined with Hurley’s Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Emergency Room and Burn Unit, this new state-of-the-art Emergency Trauma Center puts Hurley squarely at the forefront of breakthrough emergency medicine.
