Nursing Orientation

Hurley’s Nursing Education and Professional Development Department hosts new nursing staff for a 3½ day comprehensive classroom orientation. It is important to us that our new nurses have an initial understanding of our Nursing Standards and how the Nursing Department functions. The Nursing Orientation content includes: a review of nursing policies, National Patient Safety Goals and other key regulatory standards, medication policies, computer training, a review of common forms, nursing procedures and equipment, documentation expectations, Health Stream Learning Modules, demonstration of key nursing competencies, and the ability to obtain or renew BLS Certification, if needed.

Unit based orientation is a preceptor–based experience that focuses on the unique needs of each new staff member. A typical unit orientation lasts 8-12 weeks, depending on the unit and the needs of the individual.
